Need advice or assistance while in Korea? English-language help is just a phone call away.
With the holiday season upon us, we would like to remind our US citizen community to please stay safe and vigilant.
While Korea is a relatively safe country, it is not a crime free country. In the event that you or someone you know is the victim of a crime, please keep the guidelines mentioned below in mind.
When an American is the victim of a crime overseas, he or she may suffer from physical, emotional or financial injuries. This is a normal reaction to an abnormal event. It can be more difficult because the victim may be in unfamiliar surroundings, and may not know the local language or customs. Consuls, consular agents, and local employees at the U.S. Embassy know local government agencies and resources in Korea and can help victims with the next step.
Here is how we can help:
- Replace a stolen passport
- Contact family, friends, or employers
- Assist you in obtaining appropriate medical care
- Address emergency needs that arise as a result of the crime
- Explain the local criminal justice process
- Obtain information about your case
- Connect you to local and U.S. resources to assist victims of crime
- Obtain information about local and U.S. victim compensation programs
- Provide a list of local lawyers who speak English
- Investigate crimes
- Provide legal advice or represent you in court
- Serve as official interpreters or translators
- Pay legal, medical, or other fees for you
Please feel free to contact us at 02-397-4114 if you or someone you know is the victim of a crime. We would like to hear about your situation and do our best to assist you.
The thing about living in such a calm place as Korea is that we can easily start to imagine that nothing terrible could happen here. Though relatively calm and stable, anyone living here should be prepared for worst case scenarios including natural or man-made disasters. Continue reading
Answer: We recommend that you renew your passport nine months before it expires. Many countries require six months’ validity on your passport before you travel, otherwise you might not be allowed on the plane. With the summer vacation season coming up, you don’t want any bad surprises at the airport. Check your passport expiration date now to make sure you don’t run into problems if you plan to travel this year. If you do need to renew your passport, this page has all the forms and information you need to apply for a new passport…you may not even need to come to the U.S. Embassy if you meet certain requirements. Once we receive your passport renewal application, it takes about two – three weeks to complete processing.
There are a lot of American citizen services we can plan for and to some degree expect: passport renewals, questions about federal benefits or taxes, Consular Reports of Death Abroad, notary services… When you contact us for assistance or make an appointment to come to the embassy, we are happy to help you out. But there are other times that we might need to contact you, and we’re asking for help in making sure we know how to reach you. If you’ve been to our website, our Facebook page, our embassy, or our outreach events, you’ll know this isn’t the first time we’re asking you to register with the embassy, and you can bet it won’t be the last time.
